I was born in Makrynitsa, a village on Mt. Belles facing lake Kerkini and the lush plain of Serres. But was for life attracted by the beauty of the Mediterranean dry systems once I had been in Athens where my family moved in 1970. My first studies did not satisfy my spirit, and after my degree in Pharmacy at the University of Athens I found my niche in pollination ecology at the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki where I got my second degree in Biology and my PhD in Ecology. I gained a lot of research experience during my long stays in Europe as an Erasmus free mover (University of Amsterdam), post doc (Catholic University of Leuven), visiting professor (University of Alicante), and in Greece (Agricultural University of Athens and Thessaloniki), and I finally precipitated at the Department of Geography, University of the Aegean in 1997. Although the Mediterranean is big enough for a lifetime to explore, the New World challenged my research appetite, thus I spent some months as a Fulbright scholar at the Arizona State University and later at the Institute of Ecology & Systematics at the University of Havana, Cuba.

My research interests include pollination ecology, Mediterranean ecogeography, natural resources conservation, and cultural ecology. I adore marginal systems characterized by extreme conditions, and this is the reason I selected Mediterranean ecosystems, islands, xeric expansions and deserts, as well as heat loving animals, like bees, to be my research focus. I love life at the extremes, and this is why I selected salinas and terraces to be my research hobby.
