I was born in a small town in Germany right on the border with France and Switzerland. During my studies of Biology at the University of Freiburg (Germany) I spent two trimesters at the University of Reading (UK). This “short stint” in the UK should last almost a decade and so after finishing my degree in Freiburg I returned to the UK where I completed a PhD in Population Ecology at Imperial College, London and then went on to work at the Centre of Agri-Environmental  Research (CAER), University of Reading (UK) as a research assistant and post-doctoral research fellow. At CAER I was mainly involved in projects looking at ways to measure and enhance insect biodiversity in cultivated areas.

Here at the University of the Aegean I am an Assistant Professor teaching the courses (or parts of) Environment & Ecology, Ecogeography, Biogeography, Environmental Impact Assessment, Areas for Conservation (postgraduate), Environmental Threats and Dangers (postgraduate), Landscape Ecology (currently not offered) and Environmental Geography.

My main research interest is to relate assessments of the abundance, diversity, functional structure and trophic interactions of invertebrate taxa, that are key in the provision of ecosystem services (e.g. pollination, nutrient cycling and biocontrol), to impacts of ecosystem disturbances such as agricultural practices, alien species invasion, climate change, wildfires, habitat loss and degradation, at a local, landscape and regional scale. Since my time at CAER (2004) I am interested in pollinators (mainly wild bees and Syrphidae) and, together with my colleagues here, study their ecology and distribution.

I like spending my free time with my wife and my son enjoying the great outdoors, camping, climbing, hiking, etc.
